Composition

The objective of this task is to choose a movie opening of an episode or TV show, provide a link and take detailed note of camera shots, angles and movements that have previously been discussed in class.

In your notes, suggest how the camerawork has contributed to the construction of meaning. Identify what technical decisions have been made regarding the composition of shots, open or closed framing, depth of field, and how the rule of thirds has been used.

After this has been completed, focus on 2 minutes of a chosen tv show or movie and explain how the camerawork works together to create meaning for the audience.

The Avengers (2012)

Part 1

At 0.00-0.04 the camera zooms out of a cube, that seems to be a vital part of movie, to capture the viewers' attention while defining and highlighting its importance, it is followed by a tracking shot from 0.07-0.23 which leads to a character who is speaking/narrating. The speaker provides context and background information about why whatever happens later is happening. The tracking shot shows a potential major character in this movie. At point 0.35-0.42, the cube is sown again but instead the camera is zooming into it and leading into a transition. Zooming into the cube grabs the audience's attention and allows them to view some details about the cube. From 0.00-0.42 it is a closed frame, everything in the scene is contained and everything is clear due to the background being pitch black.

At points 0.44-0.57 there is a crane shot to show where the scene occurs overall, and the setting will most likely be a major part of movie. It sets the scene and the dolly shot following the helicopter until 1.03 signifies that something major is happening at a certain location which is most likely where the camera is heading, The helicopter is most likely carrying something or someone important and may capture the viewers' attention or make them wonder what the helicopter contains. The master shot from 1.04-1.05 shows a man urgently directing people and that gives the viewer a sense of urgency and. The low angle shot at 1.23-1.39 makes the people exiting the helicopter seem more important. It allows the viewer to view their body language while maintaining the scene and making it more realistic. Overall, the scene was open, and the positioning of things helped it dominate the scene, allowing focus to be drawn to it.

At points 1.44-1.48 there is a pan shot which keeps focus on characters while still showing where they are heading and their surroundings. It sets the scene to give the viewer more understanding of their setting. The shot pays more attention to them while still allowing the viewer to admire the setting. the midst at 1.48-1.52 focuses on the conversation and informs the viewer of what is occurring and why, setting the foundation of whole movie. The master shot and close-up shots at 2.02-2.26 keep the scene flowing while giving the audience an idea of where they are heading. At 2.11-2.19, there is a two shot, and it shows the emotions of the characters who are in a conversation, and it makes it more personal. The low angle shot at 2.29-2.30 shows more of the setting of their new location in the building and its size. 2:40-2.44 has a 2 shot and the tones used in the conversation create a sense of urgency. The aerial shot at 2:45-2.49 shows the setting and importance of what's occurring.  At 2.54-3.03 there is a focus pull that changes the focus point and places it on a machine that is made to be important, and it highlights its importance. The close-up at 2.53-3:18 shows facial expressions may invoke urgency. Overall, the scene was more closed due to it all being contained.

Annie (2014)

Part 2

The clip opens up with a wide shot of a little girl singing on stage next to a man. This camera shot allows the audience to see the seemingly lighthearted and comfortable relationship they have with each other, invoking a feeling of awe in the audience. Following this a midshot of a man, who is seemingly disturbed or confused, is shown. This shot provides context for the audience, that the girl singing wasn't expected by the characters, which may create confusion. A wide shot shows the girls singing while capturing more of the people playing an instrument around her while showing a small portion of the crowd. This put emphasis on how small she is compared to what she is facing and highlights her confidence performing, which may invoke a feeling of pride in certain audiences, such as parents. The usage of close up and long shots allowed the camera and audience to capture the littles girls expression and movements as she sings and looks into the audience. An over the shoulder shot shows who the little girl was looking at in the audience and shows the expression off the woman that she was looking at. By showing the clip, the audience was able to capture the loving expression on the woman's face before the camera shows a midshot of the man she is singing next to and the pride on his face. This was a swift shot to show that both the woman she was initially looking at and the man are important people for her and that they are proud. This scene may invoke a feeling of envy or pride in the audience. In all of the camera shots she is present in, she is clearly in focus and centered in the screen.

Following a close up shot of her singing, a high angle shot is used over the people playing the instruments before a wide shot shows all of them playing again. The high angle shot was used to show where the music is coming from, showing their actions that aren't noticeable from another type of shot. The camera tilts up at the conductor to show his movements and the addition of this clip communicates to the audience that the scene is more professional and fancy. The low angle shot used was to show the perspective of the woman in the crowd.

The camera continuously uses wide shot and zooms in to show the crowd and direct the attention back to the girl. The long-shots allow the audience to view her attire and the close up shot of the man allows the audience to view his expressions, such as the shock on his face, communicating that this isnt a normal occurrence. The wide shots often show the direction the little girl is looking at and her body language, communicating to the audience how she is feeling in the moment. The camera often cycles between these shots. These shots aided in establishing a location and communicates the way characters feel, providing context for the scene taking place.

Overall, the camera shots were used to provide context of the scene and provide a better understanding for the audience. All of the technical factors blended in seamlessly to create a continuous scene and invoke emotions from the audience.

Case Study

Part 1

Part 2

The objective of the first part of this task is to find a scene from your favorite film or TV show and conduct an analysis of the mise-en-scène.

Use the following questions to aid in writing the analysis:

  • What mood and/or atmosphere is created?

  • How are the characters represented?

  • How is the audience encouraged too respond to the characters?

  • How is mise-en-scène. used to provide narrative information?

The objective of the second part of this task is to find a brand advertisement of your choice and conduct an analysis of the mise-en-scène.

Use the following questions to aid in writing the analysis:

  • How was the product being represented?

  • What value is being transferred to the audience? (How is it suggested that their life will be enhanced by purchasing the product?)

Part 1

Annie (2014)

Description

The mood is tense, but hopeful. The people in the helicopter are the girl, Annie's, friends and people whom she considers family. She has been taken from her friends and family without their knowledge and now they are doing everything in their power to get her back. The mood is tense, yet hopeful and the characters are shown to be caring and worried about her. The man dropping out from the mayor race for the little girl was portrayed as kind for sacrificing his spot to show her how much she means to him. These actions are meant to invoke a feeling of sadness, awe, and compassion in the audience, allowing them to connect with this scene, whether it is personally or just a feeling of envy.

Mies-en-scène has many components and they all were present in this scene to provide insight and narrative information. The setting, or location, was chosen to create a certain mood. For most of the clip, the little girls’ friends and family were in the helicopter, in the sky, searching for her and when they found her, they followed the car to get to her. While they were in the sky, she was in a car, on the ground, trying to help them find her. When they were reunited, their location was an important part of the scene because it provided a reason why everyone was there, and it provided space for dialogue. The location of all these characters made the scene come together. Their performance also aided in the audience’s understanding. They seemed more panicked and that may have invoked a feeling of panic in the audience.

Some other components of mes-en-scène are lighting and colors. The natural lighting, from the sun, made the scene realistic and made it seem like this was occurring early in the afternoon or late morning. The lighting provides information about a scene and where this is happening. The lighting also helped define and enhance the colors. The colors of their clothing help in building their character. For example, the lady in the grey stood out less because grey is a dull color, while the girl in the helicopter stood out more in her purple jacket because it is brighter.

Editing Part 1

The objective of this task is to find 2 film or TV sequences, 1 involving a calm conversation and another involving an action scene, and working with a partner, screen 2 minutes of the first clip. While the clip is playing your partner claps every time the shot changes while you create a tally chart and mark every clap. When your partner has completed the clip you count the marks and switch roles. Repeat this process for the second clip. When you are all finished a discussion will take place.

Discussion questions:

  • How many times did you clap for each sequence?

  • How did you feel whilst viewing the extracts?

  • What impact do you think the duration of the shots can have on the audience?

  • Why do you think each sequence used shots differently? What were the editors intentions?

Calm Conversation

Action Clip

0:00-2:14

0:00-2:00

I clapped 40 times

My partner clapped 41 times

I clapped 71 times

My partner clapped 60 times

Discussion

My Response

The amount of shots taken and edited into the piece are unbelievable.

All of these shots aid in the audiences understanding of the scene and the variety of angles allow the audience to see more details such as the characters facial expressions.

I believe that in the action scene the quicker shots help create a stressful environment and the longer shots help keep things calmer.

Partners Response

He was shocked to see how many shots are taken and edited into the piece.

He believes that duration of shots can build anticipation.

He believes that it can build stress in shots in the action scenes and makes it more peaceful and calm in the calm scene.
